Wild and Woolly

Yesterday was fun in the shade as it was a touch overcast. The wind was strong at 25 mph and that increased the height I got on my jumps. I would hit a wave, put the kite at noon and the strong wind pushed me upward. John saw the biggest jump of the day, which was rare. It seems I never kite as well when he is nearby. It was thrilling to me that he got to witness such glorious air from his wife. It felt like I kept going up and up, I suspected it was 10-feet easily. Back on sand I energetically asked how high I got. Before he said a word I could tell from his expression it wasn't 10-feet. "Oh about 5-feet". Argh. It felt much higher. 5-feet??? I didn't even land it. Grumble, grumble. I was comfortable not landing 10-feet, but 5???

Thankfully the session was incident free. I had one moment where I dropped my board, retrieved it and inadvertently launched myself as I put it back on my feet. Rocketing through the air, I thought for a second I was never going to stop and land on a local kiter's head. Such a bummer when that happens.

Looking for a Monk Seal Named Kiwi

As we stood on the shivering cold Hawaiian Beach, we are locals now 79 degrees and overcast is cold; a kiteboard instructor excitedly walked past John and myself.

"A Monk Seal is hanging out in the water," he said and pointed downwind of us.

I raced for my little camera and took off down the beach.

I carefully training my camera on the seals lounging body which happened to be about 50-feet away from shore in the waves. Can you see him? Me neither or barely. Every so often I would see a brown shadowy creature rollup on a wave. I am sure he was cute. Apparently he visits every spring and has earned the name Kiwi.
When we returned back to the unit, our nosy neighbor Henny Penny was hanging by our unit. I was able to get a little video action of her.

Photo of the Day

As the wind was light and my knee was tight, we took it easy. I did happen upon Dr. Leisure's truck near Taco Bell. Only on Maui

Oh to be a Chicken

What is it about chickens that make them so comical? Running down the road, a black chicken sees me coming and starts to haul tail away from me into a neighbor's driveway. Watching the chicken lower its head so it's neck was parallel to the ground with it's legs moving as fast as they would go, squawking up a storm as it ran, is downright hysterical. A live version of the Road Runner cartoon. Then 4-feet in front of the driveway's fence it goes into operation chicken wings, out go the wings, up goes the bird, and over the fence the very round body sailed. Nothing like watching Christmas's main course fly through the air. Makes me wish I had a button to called "Deploy Chicken Wings". I guess I do, it is my kite.

Kihei Crazy

What a day. We spent the morning biking with Susan and the afternoon kiting with Susan. I can't believe she isn't sick of us yet.

John and I both fired up our 9-meters. I will say when I first went out I wondered if I should go back for my 7-meter. But who wants to walk all the way across the street for another kite size. Blah!

John took a couple of tacks first to see how it was. I then grabbed the kite and my laziness kicked in. If I could ride it why go back for another. I am actually glad I didn't. After 30 to 45 minutes it settled down and the 9-meter was perfect. I was able to edge back and ride, ride, ride. I even practiced some tiny jumps. I still wasn't going to be too adventurous though. Gusts were still flying through that threatened to send me over the moon.

Whale Celebration Day

Kalama Park on Maui was full of people, food, art and music. I think the highlight of the day was this gentleman's artwork. I am sad to say I didn't get his name.

These beauties are anatomically correct and politically questionable. Love it. They attracted a lot of sightseers.

While I was busy admiring her gorgeous rack, so high and perky with the nips pointing outward, clearly fake, I am guessing silicon, John was noticing she was anatomically correct in all areas. I completely missed it.

Once noticed though, I was happy to see the artist was an equal opportunist.
