February 2008 Island Wonder!.... click here for home
2/23 -- I picked up a Spotlight's Maui Gold magazine and it opened to an article on Hawaiian Monk Seals. It stated they are one of the most critically endangered mammals on earth.

It says to report any sights to Maui Monk Seal Watch at 808-292-2372; the state's Department of Land and Natural Resources' 24-hour hotline at 808-643-DLNR; or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's 24-hour Marine Mammal Hotline at 888-256-9840.

2/23 -- Returning from Lahaina with our "new/used" surfboard, hey, it is new to us. We scouted out surfing spots while practicing our surfing lingo. Where would be the best place to hang ten. A bogus location wouldn't suffice. We needed a place to hang loose. Get Radical. If picky up the lingo was an import part of learning to surf, I was in trouble.

Seeing some riders catch some curl, we pulled off the road. That is the interesting thing about surfing south of Lahaina. If you see a choice spot, you simply pull off the road. The water is right there. Looking at the beach, we realized it consisted of rocks. Ruining the surfboard the first day wasn't our goal. Getting out to exam the situation I noticed a seal by the water. It's dark corpse lay sadly near the water. While I prepared to be overwhelmed with an unpleasant aroma , I still crept closer to examine the situation.

What a sweet face. I instantly thought of my late dog; Mocha. At this point, a lady on the beach approached us and said he was just snoozing. She called animal control to make sure he was okay and hoped they would arrived soon, but he seemed fine to her.

I guess he got tired of that position. He rolled over

glances at us and went back to sleep. Sweet Dreams!
2/22 -- So were were in Hana this past weekend checking out all the nooks and crannies. Last time we were there we wandered over to the Red Sand Beach and saw other peoples nooks and crannies. It turns out Hana has a nude beach. I have minimal experience with public displays on nudity, but when I do, I always have the same question running through my brain. Why is it that the people that like to go nude, are the ones that truly shouldn't?

On this occasion, it was after 4 p.m., so I thought people might have gone for the day.

One of the cool things about getting to the beach is the "secret" path. It reminds me of being a child looking for hidden treasures in the woods behind our house.

At the beginning of the trail, I have two choices. I can go left to Red Sand Beach or right and drop down on the little black sand beach.

I choose the latter and what a view it offered.

It seems someone left a little message for people wandering past.

After walking across the black sand, I climbed back up on to the trail. As you look at the above photo, the Red Sand Beach is just out of sight on the left. It is a great spot. The waves break on the rock wall in the photo. Due to this, the beach basically has a pool of calm, beautiful water. I debated on heading over, but saw a bunch of pale bodies glowing in the afternoon sun. I decided my very clothed person carrying a very large camera might not be welcome. I turned around.

What a great decision. Just as I got back to the Black Sand Beach, motion on the water caught my eye. It was a whale doing pectoral flaps. I had a seat and watched him in action for a solid 5 minutes.
2/21 -- The road to Hana is such a beautiful sight. If you ever get to the island, I highly recommend doing this trip. If you can spend the night, just get a very early start so you can enjoy the amazing scenery. We stopped often to take in the view.

Of course, who wouldn't want to stop often and gaze down if this is the view that you saw.

John patiently waits at each stop while I run amok snapping lots of photos.
2/20 -- I just visited one of my favorite sites. It is thepioneerwoman.com. She had an Adobe Photoshop Tutorial. I decided to participate.

Here is my original photo. I thought it was okay.

I followed her advise and it became this. I like it. Looks like a "dream" to me.
