Maui March 2008

Island Wonder! ..click for home
3/6 -- More photos from our hike in La Perouse Bay a few weeks back. I was pleasantly surprised by the shady walk on the relatively smooth path along the waters edge.

I barely needed sunscreen under these ideal hiking conditions.

And then I walked a little further and said goodbye to the last tree I would see for some time.

I then said hello to some seriously rough looking terrain.

Wow! You can barely see my handsome honey in this foreign looking terrain. It was  a great walk and gave me an appreciation on how Maui evolved. Mother Nature is pretty amazing.

If you are one for taken the unbeaten path, literally, the LaPerouse trail is a must walk/crawl trail.

3/4 -- In search of some well formed waves, we found ourselves about a half mile south of Lahaina. With a tree to offer us shade, we took turns on the surf board.

After spending an hour on the board we swapped spots.

The time under the tree is a great opportunity to reflect on life or dinner. I should stick to life. Ultimately, I reflected on what a great time I have had this winter. The one main downside is the time away from friends and family on the east coast. I made a promise to myself to reach out to everyone when we get back and truly enjoy their company. I know I have gone months before without seeing people, but when the option is removed it feels different. As everyone realizes, there comes a time when you can't see someone with the click of a mouse and the purchase of a plane ticket. When all is said and done, we are only left with memories. It is time to make some good ones.

Just then, my eye was caught by a very handsome man riding a wave. My mind instantly switched back to dinner.

I then reflect on how that cute husband really loves Chinese Food. It is hard to find Chinese food on Maui. Check out the background of the above photo.

Chinese food with a millionaire dollar view.

3/2 -- Is it me, or did the weekend just fly past? Sunday, we decided to behave like tourists and drive around the western side of the island. It is the third time for both and as we looked into one another's eyes we gushed that it is the third time we have done this together. I then realized we were driving alongside a steep cliff and all eyes must be kept on the road. All eyes? Yes! How else will I know if I need to yell stop and step on the imaginary brake?

One of my favorite stops was Nakalele Blowhole, Maui.

Interestingly enough, we drove past it at first. On the first pass, it looked like a slightly crowded lookout location. Why stop here when plenty of lookouts are almost empty, I thought? When I couldn't get the right angle on a photograph, we turned around.

As I stood gazing around at the view, I noticed two people snorkeling in the very clear blue water, whales breeching just a few hundred yards offshore, some wild looking rock formations below and a whale blowing on land. Huh? Time to back up. Ahh! This is why everyone stopped here. A blowhole.

The hole, formed by the ocean wearing away the shore below the lava shelf, is located shortly after mile marker 38
3/1 -- Cove Park! After a little eaves dropping on a group surfing lesson ,we decided to test out our luck. Surely, with the newly imparted wisdom, it would be radical.

Numerous people have said it was a great place for beginners. One such person is our 68-year-old neighbor Nan. Nan surfs most mornings. As she pulled into the parking lot the other day, we inquired into her early surf session. She replied laughingly, "I thought I was snow boarding. I would catch a wave and there would be a bump as if I ran over a mogul."

I don't see any moguls on John's horizon.

The waves are small and plentiful, plus they break a considerable distance from shore.

A photo of me with my arms flailing like Maui windmills. John was about to blow up a kite to ride the wind I was generating.

Here is a Legendary Surfer aka 1920. Just kidding. Obviously! I decided to have a little Adobe Photoshop fun. I turned the above image into a BxW and then added a little extra red to it. In Wal-Mart last week, I picked up a booking showing Legendary Hawaiian surfers. A lot of them were reddish looking BxW photos.

I like this little technique I learned from thepioneerwoman.
She is going to create a Photoshop website also. I am waiting with bated breath.
