5/7 -- We visited the Lave Tubes
during our trip to Hana. One of the interesting
pieces of information I remember, besides the rare
worms that exist in the cave however infrequently
they are seen, was a tale about cow bones.
Apparently a slaughterhouse existed years ago near
the Lava Tube. When torrential rains hit Hana, the
water would wash the bones down into the tube. The
owner of the tubes had to carry thousands of bones
out as part of the restoration process. |

5/7-- Kathryn taking a surf lesson on
the Big Island of Hawaii from Dwayne an instructor
with www.surflessonshawaii.com.
Both my sister and niece described him as patient
and very nice which is saying something since they
don't use such favorable adjectives describing me
and surely I am the favorite aunt.
Don't all toddlers throw shoes at their favorite
aunt and announce "go home Sue"? Surely,
at four years of age, she enjoyed waving sweetly
at the nice officer as he wrote me up for
speeding. Gulp! I heard the next day, she point to a
police officer writing up another driver (as her mom
slowly cruised down the road) and announced
"Just like Auntie Su Su".

5/5 -- Kihei, our second home on this
very interesting planet. It is amazing to think in
the water below whales like to frolic, mate and give
birth every winter. Not to far away, Sugar Cane
blows in the Trade Winds while tourists travel from
many miles to get away, relax in this amazing spot
on this planet we call Earth. |

I almost like this perspective better.
Miles of tall, green grass flapping in the breeze
with the beautiful, blue waters making up the
backdrop. I rather like this drive that takes us
past Tedeschi Winery. There are few places where you
can drive an hour from your home and feel the
temperature drop 10 degrees and the clouds overhead
thicken. |

5/1 -- Onomea Trail on the Big Island
of Hawaii. I believe the trail is short, about half
a mile long, but it was so cute. We walked through
intermittent showers and I speculate this is one of
the rainier sections of the island. |

I was glad to get out and stretch my
legs. For breakfast, we ate with my sister, niece
and brother-in-law at the Four Seasons Resort. Since
they highly and I mean highly recommended the
buffet, we opted for it. I can honestly say it was
delicious and went back for seconds. But I kept
thinking about what I ate, what I knew about the
caloric content of different foods and realized I
ate my allotted caloric allowance for 3 days, in one
sitting. The plus side, I didn't get hungry for 9
hours. Literally. We ate breakfast and dinner that
day. A rare event for me. |

The trail started off high with a
sweeping view of the water, after walking down the
hill through the foliage, you can walk up to the
water. I wouldn't recommend it though. Besides the
"Danger Strong Current" sign. It seemed
like an ominous place to go swimming. |
