5/16 -- Meet Lou. Lou is a
retired Science teacher. As we gather our faculties after
our early morning downwinder, Lou approached us about
another run, a run that goes past Planet of the Apes.
It would start at the 46-mile turnout spot and we would
return to our current location in front of the Dairy
Queen. I believe it is a 7.5 mile journey.
Brian opted out. He mentioned that if you have trouble
during this run, you have to either return to the 46-mile
turnout spot or head to the Day Use area in Salvo. What
this means is, if your breakdown midway, you were looking at a 2 mile walk along
the waters edge. The brush in that area was simply too
thick. One couldn't walk through it to reach the road. The
rumor is, "only one man has made it through and he
was scratched from head-to-toe." The area is also
infested with Water Moccasins. |

Now, meet Lou's vehicle. I
believe he lives in it. One box (off-white box in photo)
will give you the room temperature of the van, the
temperature in the refrigerator which is also in the van,
and the temperature in one of the cabinets in the van.
As the back area contained a bed and the passenger seat
was full, four of us hopped onto the backseat. |

We reached our turnout
spot. |

A few puddles to navigate to
reach our parking destination. |

Kiters heading out.
Our group consisted of five kiters; John, Lou, myself,
Cindy (not missing a second opportunity today) and Lou's
friend. I missed his name.
Three kiters finished the journey. I landed at the Day
Use area in Salvo where my truck was parked. |

So, what about the fifth kiter?
Why does John appear so sad? Remember I mentioned a second
ago that if you breakdown along the Planet of the Apes,
you had a long walk in your immediate future. Well, it
appears my handsome honey's kite bridle broke. |
|
|
 |
The pulley jammed and snapped
his line in two. I believe he had a solid one-mile walk
along painful, sharp reeds. Thankfully, we purchased brand
new foot ware from Kitty Hawk Kites Thursday night. I
firmly believe in protective footwear while kiting.
