After crossing through Garden of the Gods there is a 30 to 40 minute bumpy ride down the mountain to reach Pohilua Beach. A four-wheel drive vehicle is a must.

Even with the top up, the red dirt manages to find entry points into the vehicle giving everything such as the steering wheel a light coating. My palms were red when we left.

lanai_1170.jpg (222886 bytes) It is a gorgeous drive.
lanai_1175.jpg (319544 bytes) With the terrain changing from red clay, to windswept plains,
lanai_1177.jpg (282115 bytes) back to red clay.
lanai_1182.jpg (591967 bytes) Near the bottom more vegetation is seen such as Kiawe plants. Kiawe plants have sharp thorns so wear protective clothing if you do any hiking.
lanai_1184.jpg (499638 bytes) Polihua beach is popular for it's remoteness, snow white sand, sunbathing and picnicking opportunities, but it isn't a good swimming beach due to the unpredictable surf conditions.
