Pohilua Beach, Lanai, Maui
After crossing through Garden
of the Gods there is a 30 to 40 minute bumpy ride down the
mountain to reach Pohilua Beach. A four-wheel drive vehicle is a
must. |
Besides being bumpy terrain, the wind
blows constantly, so I recommend keeping to top up if you are
driving a jeep.
Even with the top up, the red dirt manages to find entry points
into the vehicle giving everything such as the steering wheel a
light coating. My palms were red when we left. |
It is a gorgeous drive. |
With the terrain changing from red
clay, to windswept plains, |
back to red clay. |
Near the bottom more vegetation is seen
such as Kiawe plants. Kiawe plants have sharp thorns so wear
protective clothing if you do any hiking. |
Polihua beach is popular for it's
remoteness, snow white sand, sunbathing and picnicking opportunities,
but it isn't a good swimming beach due to the unpredictable surf
conditions. |
The beach is 1.5 miles long and a
wonderful photographic subject. |
