Located in Kihei or South Maui I frequently
see vans advertising surf lessons in the parking lot. It is located off Kihei Road where it intersects with
Kanani Road. Across the street from the park is a store offering rentals
on surf boards.

I learned from our 68-year-old
surfing neighbor Nan, this was a great place to start. My
first attempt at surfing south of Lahaina resulted in a
serious tumble in waves. I "caught" the wave but I
was too far forward on my board. The next thing I knew, I am
relating to clothes in a dishwasher as I tumble head over tail
under the water. When I finally stopped, I was amazed by the
amount of water in my naval passages. I remember the look on
John's face as I returned to shore. "You okay?" he
asked. A large portion on my hair had escaped the hair tie and
lay mashed against my face. "I need a rest. Your
turn" I replied.
As I gazed about at Cove Park, I
had a good feeling.
I even eaves dropped on a
lesson. It validated my theory. I had been too far forward on
the board.
