| Located on South Kihei Road, Kalepolepo Park is a 1.5
acre lot located next to the Whale Sanctuary. In between the park's
land and Maalaea Bay Harbor one will find a fish pond called Ko’ie’ie Loko which dates back to the
1400s. The reef or coral wall of the fish pond breaks the Ocean's waves
creating a calm, body of water in which to play. The calm water combined with
the soft sandy beach makes it an ideal swimming pond for young children. In
the grassy park, one will find trees for shade, a picnic table and
an outdoor shower to rinse off when done. In my time on Maui, I have noticed a lot of locals
have social events such as birthday parties and cookouts in the
park. |
 |
| Walking into the park one will be
greeted by the above sign. |
 |
| You can pack a lunch and enjoy a great
view for a minimal price. |
 |
| As we live near the park, we visit it
often and I love to take off my flip flops and wade into the fish
pond. Depending on the tide, the pond's depth can vary, but with the
exception of a severe and rare Kona Storm, I have never seen the
deepest section reach my neck and I am 5 foot 9 inches tall. |
 |
| Standing next to the Whale Sanctuary I
can see the front of the park's beach. |
 |
| I frequently see families here,
especially on the weekends. The park has a great community vibe. |
 |
| Some people arrive equipped with their
own hammock. |
 |
| If you head to the right, you will
find the Whale Sanctuary. |
 |
| I viewed a whale and calf just on the
other side of the reef one November afternoon. Spectacular! |
 |
| If you keep going around the Whale
Sanctuary you will find a trail from the park leading to a small beach. |
 |
| The Whale Sanctuary has large rocks in
front of it. They are ideal seats in which to watch the sunset. |
